The Tata Tiago is one of the most attractive and powerful compact hatchbacks launched in the country. Tata Motors has certainly hit it out of the park with the new Tiago. The Tiago has also been introduced at a very appealing price point of INR 3.20 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the petrol model and INR 3.60 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the diesel model. The Tiago should be triggering a major price war in the entry and mid-level hatchback segment. The Tiago will definitely eat into Maruti Suzuki’s volumes since it will automatically rival the Alto K10, Swift, Ritz and even the WagonR.
A big factor here is that the base price for the new Tiago hatchback is approximately INR 30, 000 lower as compared to the base Alto K10 LX model. This is a big factor that could tilt the scales in the Tiago’s favor. Also, the total cost of ownership of both models will be almost at par since Tata Motors is also an Indian brand. Costs will not vary too much though Maruti Suzuki still has the wider and more comprehensive service and maintenance network. The Tiago looks more attractive as compared to the Alto K10. The attractive design touches and styling cues in addition to the flamboyant headlamps and rear portion make it a better choice as compared to the Alto K10 which comes across as somewhat dated and bland in spite of being given a face lift sometime back.
When it comes to engines, the Tiago has the more powerful 1.2 litre engine as compared to the 1 litre engine on the Alto K10. The Alto K10 makes 90 Nm and 67 BHP while the Tiago makes 85 BHP and 114 Nm. It is clearly more powerful and punchier to drive and also has 5 mm more ground clearance (165 mm) than the Alto K10. Boot space stands at 242 litres for the Tiago in comparison to 177 litres for the Alto K10. Mileage wise, there is not a lot to separate the two cars though the Alto K10 is slightly more fuel efficient than the Tiago. Both the base models come with cup holders and some other routine features and there is nothing much to separate them in this aspect. However, price and ownership costs may actually be the turning point here. Going by the design, overall features, looks and convenience, the Tiago is clearly the better car of the two and is more aspiration to own and drive. However, the Alto K10 makes up a little with its reliability, quality and time tested performance. However, the Tiago outstrips the Alto K10 in almost all departments and that too at a lower price.
Indian customers never thought that a day would come when even the Alto started seeming a little too expensive for their taste! Such is the revolution started by the Kwid and now the Tiago. With the Datsun Redi-Go poised to be one of the cheapest ever entry level crossovers in the country, expect a tough ride ahead for India’s largest selling car.
