According to Forbes, there are some dos and some don’ts when it comes to that sometimes hesitant, impatient attitude you may have when taking your vehicle to the mechanic. A recent study done by research firm R.L. Polk reveals that many people are opting to keep their vehicles running rather than trading them in for new ones. However, a Consumer Reports survey says that just as people are putting off the purchase of a new vehicle, they are also avoiding regular and necessary maintenance checks with a mechanic. This can compromise the safety of a vehicle, and that is why drivers cannot avoid the unavoidable. Here are some dos and don’ts to take note of when getting your vehicle checked by a mechanic.
1. Properly Communicate
It is important that the customer is transparent when addressing the condition of their vehicle. Let the mechanic know what specifically you would like checked. Take note of any unusual sounds or issues you are having with your car. Take time to check everything out when you drive, and clearly relay that to your mechanic so they are able to address all of the issues and ensure these issues don’t become bigger problems.
2. Have Realistic Expectations
Don’t expect to get all of your vehicle vitals checked out and repaired without being willing to spend the money to do so. Quick and cheap is not synonymous with safe and effective. Also, don’t expect to drop off your vehicle and pick it back up within the same workday. Though it is inconvenient to part ways with your car, it is more important to let your mechanic take their time with your vehicle. Simply put, more time means more opportunity to check for potential problems and fix what may need repair.
3. Don’t Drop Off a Dirty Car
This is not only common courtesy — it is also a step in the right direction if you want quality repair. Take out any unnecessary clutter or trash in your car. Make sure you don’t have anything stored in your trunk. You don’t want anything to be in the way of what your mechanic is trying to look at.
4. Do Keep in Touch
Make yourself available to the mechanic. Leave your phone number, and plan your day around being readily available to come in to the shop to pick up your vehicle. Have your phone on you in case you need to be reached for information about your car or in case your car is ready to be picked up early.
5. Leave your Technician Alone
Let them do their job. They are trained professionals, and the last thing they need to deal with is a customer looking over their shoulder while they make repairs. Tell your technician what needs to be worked on, and trust that they will complete the job.
